As you may or may not be aware, I am always on the lookout for body products (scrubs, lotions, perfumes) that contain no phthalates. I first became aware of the toxicity of phthalates after
watching the film America the Beautiful (
more information on phthalates). I have to say, it's been really tough finding body products that smell good but don't have phthalates, although it is
getting better. During my pregnancy, I was especially vigilant about what I put on my body because phthalates are absorbed by the body and can negatively impact reproductive development. Since phthalates are most often found in scented products (they are used to create the smell), I actually used unscented body lotion from Whole Foods which I mixed with a few drops of various essential oils. That was all I could find that was safe!
How I wish I had known about
Pink Dandy then! Pink Dandy makes luxurious skin care and scented candles that are: cruelty free, phthalate free, and vegan. Pink Dandy is a spin off company of Raw Beauty that was created by Janae Chang in 2004. They use essential oils to create their rich scents, just like I had been doing, only their combinations smell MUCH better than mine did!
I had a chance to sample their
Lightly Whipped Hand and Body Lotion in "Lemon" and the
Pink Lace Roll-On Perfume Oil in "Butterfly Orchid"*. The lotion was very refreshing and light - not sticky or heavy, and the scent was great to put on before a hot day outside! I loved the richness of the body perfume oil. I honestly have not been able to use perfume at all since I before became pregnant, because it is impossible to verify whether most perfume contains phthalates (the information is usually
withheld from the ingredient list). Even though I am not nursing anymore, Little Sir pretty much gums or "kisses" my entire neck and arms daily, so I don't want to chance him getting a mouthful of phthalates. With Pink Dandy, I don't have to worry about that and I can smell good too!
